R.O.C.K. Team Member Julie
San Francisco, CA

Welcome to the fundraising page for Julie.

I am honored, excited, and rather humbled to be a member of Team R.O.C.K. (Real Options for City Kids) for the 2015 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Competing in this iconic event is only second to having the opportunity to raise money and be part of an organization that is taking a bold and holistic approach to childhood education, health, and community building. R.O.C.K. serves a community of children who are posed with countless social and economic challenges, living in San

Francisco’s Visitacion Valley. R.O.C.K. is committed to the development and success of kids ages 6-17 through a combination of in-school and after school enrichment, sports and fitness, leadership training and outdoor adventure activities. They have had amazing success over the past 20 years and I am looking forward to raising money to support their programs.

Now, on to the who, why, where, and umm… what did you sign up for Julie?

I started doing triathlons in 2006 and my very first race was in Seattle and ironically was also called, Escape from the Rock. That rock was much less intimidating and the distances were much shorter. After that experience, I was hooked and eager to increase my distance and difficulty. I ‘competed’ in several triathlons when I moved to San Francisco in 2008 and dragged my husband Conrad with me on several of them including many Olympic distance triathlons and a half-ironman. The one race that has always eluded me is Escape from Alcatraz (EFA). Unlike 99% of people competing in triathlons, the swimming portion is my favorite part of a triathlon. I love open-water swimming in various spots around the bay area and my last swim from Alcatraz was when I was six months pregnant. So, why has it taking me so long to sign up for this race? I can only blame it on my son Otis. Otis was born in 2012 and while he is the light of my life, he has put a serious strain on my training schedule.

I needed a compelling reason to agree to devote so much training time away from my family and thankfully R.O.C.K. and EFA provided me with that reason. So, this race will mark my return to open water swimming, getting back into triathlon shape, and finally conquering the EFA race. For those of you unfamiliar with the race- let me explain what lies ahead over the next few months. The race begins with a lovely boat ride to Alcatraz. From there I (along with 2,000 of my closest friends) will willingly jump into the chilly San Francisco Bay near the shores of the famous Alcatraz prison. We will swim 1.5 miles from Alcatraz to the Marina district (that is if everything goes according to plan) and once we reach shore we will sprint about a half-mile to the ‘transition zone’ where my trusty bike awaits. Next is a hilly 18-mile bike tour through the Presidio, up to the Legion of Honor, and around our beautiful city. The last leg of the race is an 8 mile run, including a run down to Baker Beach and then back up via the Equinox Sand Ladder- 400 steps of sandy torture up to an amazing view. If you see me limping or whimpering over the next several months, you will now understand the cause.

Family, friends, and colleagues please support me and this important organization as I try to reach my fundraising goal of $2,000. Feel free to cheer for me and my R.O.C.K. teammates as we reach our goal on June 7th.
